CSR Project Completion – Toilet Construction for Paliyar Tribal Community

In the quiet hills of the Palani–Shanmugam Parai Karattu region, a meaningful transformation has taken place — one that goes beyond infrastructure and touches the very core of dignity, community, and human connection.

Over the past ten days, Paalam Trust successfully completed a toilet construction project for the Paliyar tribal community, made possible through CSR support from Henkel and the active participation of the community itself.

A Community in Transition

The Paliyar tribal families, once dependent on forest-based livelihoods, have been resettled in the plains after losing access to their traditional way of life.

The Government of Tamil Nadu allocated housing pattas to 17 families, along with 1.5 acres of land per household. Yet, despite this step toward rehabilitation, essential amenities such as electricity and sanitation remained out of reach.

In the absence of basic facilities, daily life continued with challenges that affected health, safety, and dignity — especially for women and children.

Building More Than Toilets

Recognizing this urgent need, Paalam Trust stepped in to implement a community-driven sanitation initiative.

In a terrain that is both remote and hilly, toilets measuring 6×6 feet were carefully constructed — not just as structures, but as solutions shaped by the people who would use them.

What makes this project unique is its sensitivity to the community’s way of life.

The Paliyar people value togetherness and collective living. Respecting this, the design ensured that one toilet was built for every four households, preserving their cultural fabric while introducing essential infrastructure.

This was not a top-down intervention. It was collaboration. It was participation. It was trust in action.

Voices That Reflect True Impact

The true success of this initiative lies in the voices of the community.

Elder Veerammal’s words echo a profound truth:

“Even if we don’t have a house, we need a backyard.”

This simple yet powerful statement reflects the deep-rooted connection between dignity, space, and identity.

Equally moving was the joy of young Durga Devi, who eagerly said:

“I will be the first to use the toilet!”

Her excitement, coupled with her active involvement in the construction process, symbolizes a shift — from lack to access, from hesitation to acceptance, from need to empowerment.

A Model of Collaborative Impact

This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when:

  • Communities are involved, not just supported

  • Cultural values are respected, not overridden

  • Solutions are co-created, not imposed

With the support of Henkel, and the dedication of local leaders, volunteers, and community members, this initiative has created a sustainable and meaningful impact.

Beyond Infrastructure — Toward Dignity

Sanitation is often seen as a basic necessity. But in reality, it is deeply tied to:

  • Health and hygiene

  • Safety and privacy

  • Self-respect and dignity

For the Paliyar community, these toilets represent more than convenience — they mark a step toward inclusion, well-being, and a better quality of life.

Gratitude and the Road Ahead

Paalam Trust extends heartfelt gratitude to every individual who contributed to making this initiative possible — from the community members who participated wholeheartedly, to the volunteers and partners who stood by this vision.

This project is not just a completion. It is a beginning.

A beginning of healthier living. A beginning of restored dignity. A beginning of trust that leads to lasting change.
